Sikh Wedding Invitation Wording: Anand Karaj Card Samples

Anand Karaj card wording in English and Punjabi — Ik Onkar openings, Gurbani lines with meanings, a line for every function from the Path to the reception, and closing phrases.

Shaadi Invitation TeamPublished

A Sikh wedding card begins with Ik Onkar, invites guests to the Anand Karaj at the Gurdwara Sahib, and — in most Punjabi families — lists a week of functions around it: the Path, Maiyan, Jaggo, Chooda, the Milni and the reception.

This guide gives you Sikh wedding invitation wording ready to copy: complete Anand Karaj card formats in English and Punjabi (Gurmukhi), Gurbani lines with their meanings, a line for every function, and the closing phrases families use. Put them on a printed card or a digital Anand Karaj invitation.

Quick answer

What Should a Sikh Wedding Invitation Include?

A Sikh wedding invitation usually includes: “ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ” (Ik Onkar Satnam) or “Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh” at the top, a line of Gurbani about marriage, the hosts and the couple with their parents, the Anand Karaj time at the Gurdwara Sahib (with the Milni and Langar), the other functions such as Path, Jaggo and the reception, and a closing with the names of relatives eager to welcome you.

How an Anand Karaj Card Is Laid Out

  1. Mool Mantar opening — “ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ” or the Khanda symbol, sometimes with “Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh”.
  2. A Gurbani line (optional) — most often “Ek jot doe moorti”, explained below.
  3. The hosts and the couple — “Sardar & Sardarni [Name]” invite you to the Anand Karaj of their daughter or son, with the other family named too.
  4. The Anand Karaj — Gurdwara Sahib's name and address, the Milni time, the Anand Karaj time and Langar. The ceremony is traditionally held in the morning.
  5. Other functions — Sehaj or Akhand Path bhog, Mehndi and Sangeet, Maiyan, Jaggo, Chooda and the reception, each with its date, time and venue.
  6. Closing — a request for your blessings and the names under “Darshan Abhilashi” and “Swagat Karta”.

Punjabi (Gurmukhi) Anand Karaj Card Wording

For elders and family back in Punjab, many cards carry the invitation in Gurmukhi. Here is a simple, formal format you can adapt.

Punjabi format: Shubh Viah

Words you'll see on Punjabi cards: ਸ਼ੁਭ ਵਿਆਹ (Shubh Viah, auspicious wedding), ਅਨੰਦ ਕਾਰਜ (Anand Karaj, the Sikh marriage ceremony), ਮਿਲਣੀ (Milni, the meeting of the two families), ਸੱਦਾ (sadda, invitation) and ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਅਭਿਲਾਸ਼ੀ (darshan abhilashi, “eager to see you”), followed by family names.

Gurbani Lines for Sikh Wedding Cards

One line of Gurbani about marriage is a beautiful touch. Write the meaning under it for guests who don't read Gurmukhi.

Sikh Wedding Invitation Etiquette: Dos and Don'ts

Do's

  • Open with “ੴ” or the Khanda
  • Give the Gurdwara Sahib's full name and address
  • State the Milni and Anand Karaj times clearly — guests plan around the morning
  • Mention Langar so guests know a meal is served

  • List every function with its own venue and map link

Don'ts

  • Don't schedule the Anand Karaj in the evening — it's traditionally held before noon
  • Don't leave out the Gurdwara's address — many cities have several
  • Don't print long passages of Gurbani on a card that will be thrown away
  • Don't forget to proofread Gurmukhi spellings
  • Don't skip a contact number for guests' questions

Frequently asked questions

  • Most Sikh wedding cards open with “ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ” (Ik Onkar Satnam), the Khanda symbol, or the greeting “Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh”. Some add a line of Gurbani about marriage, such as “Ek jot doe moorti” from Ang 788 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

  • The Anand Karaj is traditionally held in the morning, before noon, at a Gurdwara Sahib. Cards usually give the Milni time first (for example 9:00 AM), then the Anand Karaj (for example 10:00 AM), followed by Langar.

  • “Darshan Abhilashi” (ਦਰਸ਼ਨ ਅਭਿਲਾਸ਼ੀ) means “eager to see you”. It's a closing heading on Punjabi and Hindi wedding cards, followed by the names of the family members who look forward to your presence. “Swagat Karta” lists the relatives who will receive the guests.

  • Common functions are the Sehaj or Akhand Path bhog, Mehndi and Sangeet, Maiyan, Jaggo, Chooda and Kalire, the Milni and Anand Karaj at the Gurdwara, and the reception. List each with its own date, time and venue.

  • Yes. Many families write the card in English with “ੴ” at the top, and add a few lines in Gurmukhi for elders. Use “Sardar” and “Sardarni” for the hosts if your family prefers, and give the Gurdwara's full name and address.

  • Create a digital Anand Karaj invitation and send its link to family groups with a short message. On Shaadi Invitation the Sikh Vibrant design opens with Ik Onkar, lists every function with its venue on Google Maps and lets guests call either family in one tap. It's free to design and preview; the link is a one-time payment.
