Christian Wedding Invitation Wording: Card Samples & Bible Verses

Indian Christian wedding card wording for Holy Matrimony and Nuptial Mass, Bible verses with references, lines for the Engagement, Roce and Reception, and Hindi and Malayalam touches.

Shaadi Invitation TeamPublished

An Indian Christian wedding card usually reads like a quiet blessing: a line of scripture, the parents inviting you to witness their children's Holy Matrimony at a named church, and details of the reception that follows. Around it sit the family's own customs — the Roce in Mangalorean and Goan homes, the betrothal and minnu in Kerala, the banns read in the parish.

Below is Christian wedding invitation wording you can copy: formal and modern card formats, Bible verses for invitations (from public-domain translations, with references), lines for the Engagement, Roce and Reception, Hindi and Malayalam touches, and the etiquette families ask about. Use it on a printed card or a digital Christian wedding invitation.

Quick answer

What Should a Christian Wedding Invitation Include?

A Christian wedding invitation usually includes: a short Bible verse or blessing, the hosts (often both sets of parents), the bride and groom's full names, the words “Holy Matrimony” or “Nuptial Mass” with the church's name, address, date and time, the reception venue and time, and a closing such as “Your presence and prayers are requested.” Catholic cards sometimes note the Nuptial Mass; many families add the Engagement or Roce as separate functions.

How an Indian Christian Wedding Card Is Laid Out

  1. Scripture or a blessing — one short verse at the top, with its reference.
  2. The hosts — usually both sets of parents (“Mr. & Mrs. … and Mr. & Mrs. … request the honour of your presence”), or the couple “together with their families”.
  3. The couple — full names, often with “son of” and “daughter of” lines.
  4. The ceremony — “Holy Matrimony” or “Nuptial Mass”, the church's full name and address, date and time.
  5. The reception — venue and time, often “immediately after the service” or that evening.
  6. The closing — a request for your presence and prayers, and RSVP contacts.

Wording for the Engagement, Roce and Reception

Indian Christian weddings often have functions around the church service. Use these under each one.

  1. Weeks or months before

    Engagement / Betrothal

Please join us as Maria and Rohan exchange rings and receive their families' blessings. In many Kerala families this is the betrothal, held in church.

  2. A few days before

    Bridal Shower

An afternoon of games, gifts and laughter for the bride-to-be — ladies, save the date!

  3. The day before

    Roce (Ros)

Join us at home for the Roce, as family anoint the bride and groom with coconut milk and bless them before the wedding — a Mangalorean and Goan Catholic tradition.

  4. The wedding day

    Holy Matrimony

The marriage will be solemnised at [church] at [time]. Please be seated ten minutes early.

  5. After the service

    Reception

Lunch, toasts and the first dance at [venue], from [time].

Hindi and Malayalam Lines for Christian Cards

Many North Indian and Kerala families add a line in their own language for elders. Keep it short and add the English below.

Christian Wedding Invitation Etiquette: Dos and Don'ts

Do's

  • Give the church's full name and address — many towns have several St. Mary's
  • Mention whether it's a Nuptial Mass, so guests expect a longer service
  • Say when the reception starts, especially if there's a gap after the service
  • Use a verse your church's translation uses, with its reference
  • Add a Google Maps link for the church and the reception venue
  • Ask guests to arrive a little early — church services start on time

Don'ts

  • Don't print a long passage — one verse is enough
  • Don't forget the parish hall or reception address if it's not the church
  • Don't leave out the Roce or Engagement if you want guests there
  • Don't put gift registry details on the main card
  • Don't skip proofreading names and church details

Checklist before you send

  • Verse and reference correct?
  • Church name, address and service time right?
  • Reception venue and time clear?
  • Both families' names spelled correctly?
  • Map links open the church and the hall?
  • Contact numbers added?

Frequently asked questions

  • Popular choices are Mark 10:9 (“What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder”), 1 Corinthians 13:4 (“Love is patient and is kind”), Ecclesiastes 4:12 (“A threefold cord is not quickly broken”), Genesis 2:24 and Ruth 1:16. Use one short verse with its reference, from the translation your church uses.

  • “Holy Matrimony” refers to the marriage service itself. A “Nuptial Mass” is a Catholic wedding celebrated within a full Mass, so the service is longer. Writing which one it is helps guests plan their time.

  • The Roce (or Ros) is a pre-wedding ceremony in Mangalorean and Goan Catholic families, usually held at home the day before the wedding, where relatives anoint the bride and groom with coconut milk and bless them. It's often listed as a separate function on the invitation.

  • Traditionally the bride's parents host, but in India it's common for both sets of parents to invite together. Modern cards often say “Together with their families” followed by the couple's names.

  • Yes. Many families add a short line in Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil or Konkani for elders, with the English wording below. On Shaadi Invitation, your welcome and closing messages show exactly the text you type, in any language.

  • Make a digital invitation and send its link with a short message. The Christian Classic design on Shaadi Invitation shows scripture, every function with its own Google Maps link and one-tap calls to both families. It's free to design and preview; the link is a one-time payment.
